My artistic expression has evolved over six decades. I call the decades "columns."  Each one represents a different art pursuit. My early influences came from growing up in Westtown and West Chester, Pennsylvania. Inspiration came from magical childhood exposure to rural living combined with wonderful trips to Philadelphia and New York City, rural and urban structures that I was instantly drawn to, and extremely artistic parents (music teacher and artist/industrial arts teacher), who gave complete freedom and support to me, my sister, and my brother in our endeavors in the world of art.

I was always drawing, using paint, and soaking up farm life nature as a child and teenager. My attention turned to crafts in the 1970’s. My shop, Roberta’s Curio, on Church Street in West Chester was a significant step toward progress in my decoupage, macramé, painting column. Late bloomer that I am, at age 26 I discovered my overwhelming interest in becoming a Landscape Architect.  I moved to Boston to attend Massachusetts Bay Community College and Rhode Island School of Design. After graduation in 1983, my passion and steadfast happiness has been a result of painting, designing landscapes, working with urban and rural properties, solo art shows, and selling my art and gallery representation.

My art, my work. Color expressionism. Bold color contrast and texture – often using impasto technique, other times very smooth surface with a drawing touch into the paint.  I experience emotion in the presence of nature. My art is a reflection of how I communicate with the world. I am inspired by land form, architecture, space relationships, plant material, contrast and color. I need to convey the mood, behavior and gesture of the subject matter.  I rely on the color of the weather, sky, and ground to give life to the characteristics -- the overall meaning -- of the painting.

Clients

I love my clients! They mean the world to me and what they say truly matters.  Here are just a few of the comments they have sent to me:

  • Dramatic. Painterly. Buttery rich with texture and color. I see some new detail in my three Iula paintings every day. They are windswept and intimate at the same time. I love living with Roberta's work and I am looking forward to collecting more!    - Debra Cornelius, Carlisle, PA

  • Roberta is as delightful as her paintings are ! They're lively, colorful,  full of life. I love her artwork, and am pleased to be the proud owner of an ink drawing of a conch shell that she did several years ago. Her paintings of the ocean are wonderful, as are her new watery acrylic florals, which jump off the canvas, inviting themselves into your home !     - Judy Pyle, Gettysburg, PA
